Good to see expectations are being met. I myself went out of my way to do side quests towards the end just because I did not want the game to end. There is something very timeless about this game and the fact it still holds up for people who never played it in this day and age is pretty crazy. I think putting this game out on the DS was such a great idea especially because it schools so many other RPGs on the system trying to evoke the 16-bit RPG era and missing the mark by so much.

Mitsuda's music is definitely one of the best things about this game. At certain points (when I was playing it the first couple of times on an emulator, SNES-less person that I am) I had to stop playing, go back to an earlier point, and save a freeze frame right at the spot that a particular track started, so that I could listen to it over and over again whenever I wanted.

Even when I'm not playing the game (and I haven't in a while, sadly), I'm very often listening to the score and the many, many, many variations on it in my spare time. This composer does amazing work. You might be interested in listening to what he did for Chrono Cross and Xenogears if you haven't already.

If you like Gato's theme, you simply must check this out: http://ocremix.org/remix/OCR00313/

(-:

As someone noted above, I don't think you have to worry about the game petering out early. It's superbly paced, with few (if any) draggy bits.

If the game has a flaw, I think it's the complete and utter lack of any challenge. When I picked up the DS version, I made the conscious decision to avoid anything that could conceivably be considered grinding, avoiding every enemy encounter that could be avoided and skipping every side quest. Even while being as underleveled as it is possible to be while still completing the main quest, I managed to never die. Granted, this must have been my tenth or twelfth playthrough, but still.

I don't know what your policy is when it comes to strategy guides and such, but if I may offer a suggestion, if you haven't already been spoiled, do your best to avoid gameplay spoilers for the last boss. I shall say no more.

And please do continue updating us on your impressions. Much like the Manga Review of Awesomeness on the Daizex podcast, it is very cool enjoying an old friend through new eyes.

I just recently finished playing the game on the DS. Having my hands at the SNES and PSX version, I never bothered to actually finish playing the game, up until now. I pretty much have to agree with you on every account except, to an extent, Toriyama's nature of design. While his material did have a nature of pretty much recycling designs, I always thought Chrono Trigger and his Dragon Quest material was probably some his more imaginative work around. Even more so than Dragon Ball, where he was working on a weekly schedule. Currently, his design work on DQ Swords for the Wii and DQIX for the DS have pretty much departed from the archaic nature he's infamously (or famously, depending on how you look at it) associated with. The only time I actually felt Toriyama was genuinely ripping off of Dragon Ball for his VG work was Blue Dragon. Even then, I still enjoyed the game to a degree. Don't mind me though, I'm just a sucker for the guy......and RPGs :P

I'm glad you went into this with an open mind and actually gave the game a chance. You've put into words why I love this game but have never really been able to convey. Anyways the game definitely gets better. Soak it all in man.

Well done sir. It's definitely a classic and one of my favorite games of all time. Don't feel too bad though, I didn't play it until 2001 myself with the PSX version.

Oh, and the game blowing it's proverbial load? Oh hell no. Hell no, sir. Just you wait. So many choices you can make, and so many reasons to replay this game...it's just...beautiful.
