The game is indeed very easy: I'd recommend that anyone over the age of ten play at Normal, and anyone who's played this type of game before should probably start out on Hard.

Anyway, Runic's official forums are an absolute treasure trove of info on the game, but they might be a little intimidating to a newbie. http://forums.runicgames.com/

Really if you're playing on Easy or Normal you don't have to worry too much about "doing it wrong," the game will be very forgiving and you can mess around with different skills and equipment without worrying about "wasting" your skill points or gold.

With a Destroyer your basic strategy is to pump most of your stat points into Strength and Defense, choose one attack skill that has a low enough mana cost that you can use it most of the time without running out and assign it to your left mouse button, later on choose another one with a higher mana cost and assign it to your right mouse button, and go nuts clicking on things to kill them. The rest of your skill points you can pump into passive skills like Dual Wield or Martial Weapons expertise that constantly give you bonuses without your having to do anything.

I also just picked up Torchlight for the $5 sale on Steam the day after Christmas. I played pretty much the exact same amount you did. So far I dig it, but I can't honestly say I'm feeling myself getting pulled back into it. I guess my main thing with it is that I wish it was multiplayer. Like you, this is my first real experience with any kind of Diablo-esque game. I think I may have played like 5-10 minutes of Diablo 2 waaaay back in the day, but that's it. However, as I think you know, I am a WoW player and thusly keep up with what Blizzard is doing. So I've been anticipating getting into Diablo 3 once it comes out since it looks super polished, detailed and just straight-up fun. But I know that when that comes out I'll be playing it with 3 other people in a 4 person party. So with Torchlight, it's a similar gameplay experience, but by yourself. This can certainly have it's advantages (something to put on when other people aren't around), but I'm definitely a co-op group game type guy. Either way, I do plan to get into the game some more.

I picked this up when it was the daily deal on Steam for $5 (on the 26th, I believe). I played a lot of "Diablo II" when I was around 12 or 13, but I kind of fell out of love with it, because I wasn't making progress in the storyline, despite how much time I was spending with it... And I absolutely sucked at the gameplay.

That said, I'm absolutely in love with "Torchlight." I'm playing an alchemist (Edward), with a dog (Alphonse, because I'm incredibly unoriginal). It's paced much better than games that came before it. It's a little more user friendly (walking over gold collects it for you, rather than forcing you to click on every individual piece; you can send your dog to town with your loot so you don't have to leave the dungeon).

I have found it to be a little easy, though. Granted, I'm playing on easy, because I remember sucking at "Diablo," but I keep having too much loot, and running out of room to keep things that I want. Beyond that, the items I'm finding are far too powerful. It may just be that I'm familiar with the core mechanics that are at play here.

I'm playing with a touchpad on my laptop, though, which makes combat a little chaotic. I find that I'm sometimes not clicking on anything, or that, where I'm using a ranged weapon, when I try to walk, I'll be clicking on a distant monster, and shooting at it instead.

All-in-all, it's been a fun distraction, and I'm looking forward to seeing the resulting MMO. I wish there were more than like, three people in town that would give you quests, though.
